When Is The Best Time to Go Skiing in Europe

Fresh air, mesmerising scenery, rising peaks – wintertime is truly a magical season. If you love skiing and you are hoping to get the best value for your money, perhaps you want to spend the holiday somewhere busy, but not too busy (which has a lot to do with timing). So, when is the best time to go skiing in Europe?

After all, we all know skiing is far from being a budget-friendly sport. However, you can even enjoy the beauty of the Swiss and French Alps without breaking the bank – if you know when is the right moment to head to the mountains.

When does the season start?

Most European resorts open at the end of November. Less crowded, November is many beginners’ choice. However, avid skiers may not enjoy resorts around this time of the year due to a risk of poor skiing conditions. The season lasts until late April (early June in Finland), while the peak of the season covers February and March.

When is the best time to go on skiing holiday?

If you don’t like sharing your powder with the crowds, then visit around this time:

  • November and early to mid-December
  • The second week of January
  • The first and the second week of March
  • April (except for the days around Easter)

If you don’t mind teeming slopes, then you can’t go wrong with:

  • Days around Christmas and New Year
  • School holidays in January/February
  • Weekends
  • Days around Easter

When is the cheapest to go?

Prices can almost double around the peak of the season – February and March. If you stay away from the mountains during the above-listed busy periods, you can save a lot of time and still enjoy the slopes and less queued lifts!

Ski resorts at a higher altitude than 2,000m feature longer snow season. That means you can go on a holiday even around the last quarter of March and April. The following resorts have more chance of snow:

  • SaaS Feed, Switzerland
  • Tignes, France
  • Serre-Chevalier-Briancon, France
  • Bansko, Bulgaria
  • Zermatt, Switzerland
  • Livigno, Italy
